IN THIS TEACHING

In The Bardo Thödol Teachings, Mark Griffin presents a profound exploration of consciousness across life, death, and the intermediate state, revealing the Bardo not as an abstract concept but as the direct experiential continuum of awareness itself. Drawing from the classical teachings attributed to Padmasambhava, the discourse reframes death as a moment of extraordinary opportunity—an encounter with the Clear Light of Reality in which liberation becomes immediately possible.

Griffin explains that the term Bardo refers to an interval or transitional state, while Thödol means “liberation upon contact.” Together, they describe the dynamic field in which consciousness moves between embodiment and dissolution. Far from being separate events, life and death are revealed as continuous expressions within the same Ocean of Consciousness—the Great Light that underlies all experience.

The teaching outlines a comprehensive model of six Bardos—life, dream, meditation, death, post-death, and rebirth—demonstrating how consciousness cycles through multiple states while maintaining continuity. Central to this model is the recognition that identity is not fixed, but constructed through memory, perception, and karmic conditioning. Every thought, emotion, and action is recorded within the subtle channels of the body, forming the energetic and psychological structure that shapes both life experience and the moment of death.

A key emphasis is the encounter with the Clear Light during the death process. This luminous reality appears repeatedly, offering the possibility of immediate enlightenment through recognition. However, conditioned by fear, attachment, and ignorance, most individuals fail to recognize this light and instead descend into increasingly complex states of perception. The teaching makes clear that the moment of death is not governed by external judgment but by the internal condition of consciousness itself—what one has cultivated in life becomes the field of experience in death.

Griffin further reveals that spiritual practice is, in essence, preparation for this moment. Meditation, breath awareness, and the refinement of attention are described as direct rehearsals for navigating the Bardo. The natural mantra So–Ham and the interval between breaths become gateways to the same Clear Light encountered at death, allowing practitioners to stabilize recognition while still embodied.

Ultimately, The Bardo Thödol Teachings presents a radical vision of spiritual life: every moment of experience is a movement within consciousness, and the ultimate opportunity for liberation is continuously present. By understanding the mechanics of mind, karma, and awareness, the practitioner gains the capacity to recognize the Great Light—whether in meditation, in life, or at the decisive moment of death.
