Cutting Through the Web of Desire

Pacific Palisades Woman's Club Los Angeles, CA August 25, 2007

The Recognition of Consciousness by Mark Griffin reveals awakening as the direct recognition of awareness itself, dissolving the illusion of ego and revealing consciousness as the true nature of reality. Through nondual insight, the Blue Pearl, and meditative awareness, this teaching explores how identity is constructed and how it can be transcended through direct experience.

IN THIS TEACHING

In The Recognition of Consciousness, Mark Griffin presents awakening as a direct and immediate event: consciousness recognizing itself. This recognition is described as the most direct pathway to enlightenment—an instantaneous shift in perception in which the apparent division between subject and object collapses into a unified field of awareness. In this moment, identity is revealed not as a fixed entity, but as a constructed process arising from sensation, memory, and mental formation.

Griffin examines how the sense of “I” is assembled through layered processes: sensory input, pranic movement, storehouse memory, and conceptual thought. These layers give rise to the illusion of a stable self, yet they are continuously shifting and dependent on underlying conditions. Through this analysis, the teaching aligns closely with the insights explored in Modifications of the Mind, where identity is understood as a pattern of conditioned activity rather than an inherent reality.

At the center of the teaching is the movement of recognition itself—a reflex of awareness turning inward. Griffin describes this as a “cutting-through” gesture of attention, a direct seizure of the inner reality beyond conceptual mediation. This movement is not gradual accumulation but immediate insight, echoing the nondual principles articulated in Everything & Nothing, where the distinction between perceiver and perceived is dissolved.

A key experiential gateway in this process is the emergence of the Blue Pearl, or bindu, described as a scintillating point of consciousness within the subtle body. This inner locus serves as a doorway through which individual awareness merges with the Ocean of Consciousness, a theme further explored in Rupa: The Blue Pearl. Through sustained attention, the practitioner moves beyond identification with the sensory and mental layers into direct contact with this deeper continuum.

The teaching also addresses the role of desire as the underlying force sustaining individual identity. Desire is presented as a fragmentation of a primordial impulse toward wholeness—an attempt to resolve perceived separation through external means. Yet this outward movement perpetuates the cycle of dissatisfaction. Through meditation, discrimination, and practices such as the SoHam breath, the practitioner begins to withdraw attention from these patterns, stabilizing awareness in the substratum of consciousness itself.

Ultimately, The Recognition of Consciousness reveals awakening not as something to be attained, but as something to be recognized. Consciousness is already present, self-luminous, and complete. The path, therefore, is one of refinement and direct insight—removing the obscurations that prevent recognition. In this realization, the individual self and universal consciousness are seen to be one continuous reality, accessible in the still point of awareness and stabilized through ongoing practice.
