IN THIS TEACHING

Space Between the Breaths Meditation centers on the subtle yogic principle that the gap between inhalation and exhalation is a direct doorway into stillness, void, and awakened awareness. The meditation begins with deep bellows breathing rooted in the solar plexus, aligning breath, prana, and attention while attuning the practitioner to the spontaneous vibration of SoHam within the central channel. Here, So represents the manifest universe and the outward movement of creation, while Ham represents the ocean of consciousness at the crown. As awareness refines, these apparent dualities merge into a singular current within the central nerve, revealing a deeper unity of consciousness and life force.

The core method is deceptively simple yet profound: rather than focusing on the breaths themselves, the practitioner rests attention in the space between the breaths—the silent interval where neither inhalation nor exhalation dominates. This inner gap is described as a void-like field of pure awareness, analogous to perceiving the space between objects rather than the objects themselves. By stabilizing attention in this interval, the mind naturally withdraws from sensory fixation and conceptual movement, allowing consciousness, prana, and mind to blend into a unified stream of meditation.

Over time, sustained attention on this inner space draws awareness inward toward the central channel and deeper states of meditation, where the vibration of SoHam becomes self-arising rather than willfully repeated. The teaching emphasizes that this space is not emptiness in a nihilistic sense, but the living ground of enlightenment—the subtle field in which bodhicitta (the awakened heart-mind) becomes increasingly prominent. As attention “locks” into the gap between breaths, the practitioner experiences a growing force of clarity, presence, and inner stillness, making it easier to move between ordinary consciousness and awakened awareness in daily life, whether sitting in meditation or engaged in activity.
