The Astral Body

What the Astral Body Is, And How to Activate It

Fire Mountain Retreat Center Ganeshpuri, India October 4, 2011

In The Astral Body, Mark Griffin presents the subtle body as the energetic architecture underlying consciousness, karma, and Kundalini awakening. As the opening teaching of the 2011 India Yatra, it offers a foundational map of the inner system through which awareness moves beyond the physical form in life, dream, and death.

IN THIS TEACHING

The Astral Body presents one of Mark Griffin’s most precise teachings on the subtle body as the primary vehicle of perception, transformation, and the continuity of consciousness across lifetimes. Rather than treating life as rooted in the physical organism, Griffin reveals that prana originates in the subtle body and descends into the physical form, animating it as a temporary vessel within a larger energetic continuum.

At the center of this teaching is the functioning of the five pranas—prana, apana, vyana, samana, and udana—which govern the movement of vitality, circulation, and the pathways through which consciousness ultimately exits the body at death. This model reframes the human system as an energetic structure in which the physical body is secondary to the deeper currents of energy and prana.

Griffin then introduces a layered model of human existence through the four bodies—physical, subtle, causal, and supracausal—offering a map through which awareness evolves from sensory identity toward higher states of realization. Within this framework, the heart becomes a gateway into the causal field, opening into a vast continuum of mind that transcends ordinary time and space.

A defining image in the teaching describes the astral body as a luminous, nebula-like field—initially clouded by karmic obscuration but gradually clarified through Kundalini awakening and the descent of Shaktipat. As this process unfolds, the subtle body becomes increasingly radiant, transforming from a carrier of karmic residue into a vehicle of conscious realization.

The teaching further explores the alchemical dynamics of white and red bodhicitta, describing how awakened energy refines the system through the production of soma, stabilizing higher cognition and supporting entry into states of samadhi. Through this process, the practitioner’s identity begins to shift from the physical body to the subtle body, which Griffin describes as the true traveler through the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth.

Ultimately, The Astral Body reframes spiritual life as a movement of identification—from the temporary physical form into the enduring subtle continuum—revealing consciousness as a continuous field rather than a finite, embodied event. Through meditation, energetic refinement, and the influence of the Guru’s grace, practitioners begin to perceive existence from the standpoint of continuity, transforming both the experience of life and the approach to death.
