IN THIS TEACHING

In Form and Consciousness, Mark Griffin presents a profound inquiry into the nature of reality, revealing form and awareness not as separate phenomena, but as inseparable expressions of a single continuum of consciousness. Drawing from both contemplative insight and subtle-body frameworks, the teaching explores how the universe—and the human being—arise as layered expressions of awareness, from gross physical form to the most subtle dimensions of pure consciousness.

At the heart of the teaching is the recognition that what we perceive as “form” is not independent substance, but a conditioned appearance arising within consciousness itself. Griffin describes this through the model of the four bodies—physical, subtle energetic, causal, and supracausal—each representing progressively subtler layers of experience. These layers do not exist independently, but are interwoven expressions of a deeper field of awareness, aligning with the nondual insights explored in Everything & Nothing.

A central theme is the way identity becomes bound to the sensory world and the physical body, while subtler dimensions of consciousness remain present but unrecognized. Through this misidentification, awareness appears fragmented, giving rise to the sense of separateness. This process is closely related to the mechanisms described in Modifications of the Mind, where perception, memory, and conceptual thought construct the illusion of a stable self and world.

Through meditation and refined attention, the practitioner begins to observe how consciousness moves through these layers—outward into sensory experience and inward toward subtle awareness. As attention withdraws from external fixation and stabilizes in deeper strata of perception, the apparent solidity of form begins to dissolve, revealing its dependence on underlying consciousness.

The teaching culminates in a direct insight into emptiness: that all phenomena—physical, energetic, and mental—are interdependent and therefore empty of independent existence. Yet this emptiness is not a void, but the living ground of awareness itself. In this recognition, form and consciousness are no longer experienced as separate, but as mutually arising expressions of the same reality, a realization that aligns with the direct recognition described in The Recognition of Consciousness.

Ultimately, Form and Consciousness serves as a bridge between perception and realization. It reveals how the world of form is constructed within consciousness, and how, through insight and direct experience, that construction can be seen through. In this way, the teaching leads beyond conceptual understanding into the direct realization of reality as a unified field of awareness—where form is consciousness, and consciousness is all that appears.
